Fitting a new speaker basket

Why do this?

After 10 years of trouble-free operation from my TNT-150 Bass Amp the speaker started buzzing. After confirming that the speaker was at fault I called Peavey customer support. They asked if I use a 6-string bass, because the TNT was not designed to handle the lower frequencies of this now-popular bass. I don't play a 6-string but I use an octave effect on one particular song in the set. They said this could be the cause as the speaker is not designed to handle 20Hz. Luckily Peavey have arranged things so the speaker basket can be easily changed  - a replacement costs about £60. Here's how to do it.

Step 1 – Remove the speaker grill.

The speaker grill is held on with velcro-type fixings. Carefully lever of the front cover to expose the speaker and fixings.

Step 2 – Remove the speaker.

Lay the cabinet on its back and remove the screws holding the speaker in place.
Lift the speaker and either note or mark the polarity of the speaker connections.

Step 3 – Check the speaker is the cause of the problem

Hook up a known good speaker to the output from the Peavey. You don't have to remove the amp as shown here . I hooked my Peavey up to an old Marshall 4 x 12.

Step 4 – Remove the magnet and inspect the cone.

To remove the magnet, undo the three fixing bolts and carefully lift the magnet off squarely. Inspect the coil. In my case you can see where the coil was rubbing against the magnet.

Step 5 – Note the basket model number.

If you've concluded the speaker is at fault, make a note of the model number details on the side of the old basket. Order a replacement from Peavey.

Step 6 – Unpack and fit the new basket

Clear a working space and remove any metal objects. Clean out the groove in the existing magnet as described in the instructions. I practiced the next step with the old speaker first. Place the magnet face up and carefully lower the basket over the coil. Be very careful not to damage the coil. Turn the assembly over and re-fit the magnet securing bolts.

Step 7 – Fit the speaker.

Re-connect the speaker connections, noting the polarity. Fit the speaker into the cabinet and secure all the screws.
